China has launched the Gezoba, the world’s largest fully electric river cargo ship, marking a milestone in sustainable maritime innovation. The vessel boasts a 13,000-ton capacity and operates entirely on lithium battery power, underscoring China’s drive toward cleaner industrial transport.
Powered by 12 lithium battery units with a total capacity of 24,000 kilowatt-hours, the Gezoba can travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge. Its modular battery design allows for quick replacements, enhancing operational efficiency.

According to engineers, the project combines large-scale energy storage, remote piloting, and intelligent maritime communication, a major leap in integrated ship technology.
Experts estimate the ship will save 617 tons of fuel and reduce 2,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. Yin Shunping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering described the innovation as “a breakthrough that unifies advanced batteries with intelligent control systems,” highlighting China’s commitment to sustainable and high-tech shipping solutions.
