China has initiated large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, simulating a full-scale blockade and the seizure of key areas. Codenamed “Justice Mission 2025,” the drills involve the army, navy, air force, and rocket force. Beijing described the maneuvers as a “severe punishment” for “separatist forces” seeking independence. The escalation follows the United States’ recent announcement of an $11 billion weapons package for Taiwan, a move that prompted Beijing to sanction several American defense firms and intensify its military rhetoric.

The Chinese military’s Eastern Theater Command characterized the exercises as a “shield of justice,” warning that those plotting independence would be “annihilated.” Taiwan’s defense ministry reported detecting 89 Chinese aircraft and 28 vessels near the island on Monday alone. In response, Taiwan has placed its missile systems and military forces on “high alert.” President Lai Ching-te’s administration criticized the drills as a challenge to international norms, while emphasizing that Taiwan remains committed to maintaining the status quo through “real strength” and enhanced defense capabilities.

The major phase of the live-fire exercises is scheduled for Tuesday, which is expected to disrupt regional travel, with over 100,000 passengers affected by flight diversions. These drills also aim to project deterrence “outside the island chain,” amid rising tensions with Japan over its potential involvement in a Taiwan conflict. China maintains that any attempt to obstruct its “reunification” is doomed to fail.
