Creators Matt and Ross Duffer officially addressed the swirling rumors regarding a surprise sixth season of the Netflix global phenomenon, Stranger Things. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the duo firmly shut down theories that the recently released fifth season left the narrative door ajar. Ross Duffer emphasized that the eight-episode finale was designed to “truly close the door” on the central mythology of Hawkins, the Upside Down, and the core group of characters that fans have followed since 2016.
The Duffer Brothers on a potential return to #StrangerThings:
“This season really does close the door on this story and the characters. I guess never say never, maybe in 20 years when we’re all broke and need some money. We’ve talked about it; this is our safety net.” pic.twitter.com/gJMaQl11Qi

Despite the definitive ending, the brothers maintained a “never say never” attitude toward a potential reunion in the distant future. Ross joked that the cast might consider returning in 20 years if they ever needed a “safety net,” a sentiment echoed by star Finn Wolfhard. Wolfhard noted that while a story involving the characters at a “very different stage of life” could be interesting, the show has officially run its course. Netflix also moved to debunk “Conformity Gate” a fan theory suggesting a secret ninth episode, by updating its social media bios to confirm that all episodes have been released.
