Japan Hit by Record Snow, At Least 30 Dead

Feb 4, 2026 | Latest News

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has ordered the emergency deployment of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) following a catastrophic two-week period of record-breaking snowfall that has left 30 people dead and hundreds injured across northern and western Japan.

Record-Shattering Accumulation

A relentless Arctic air mass has blanketed the archipelago, with the northern city of Aomori recording 183cm (72 inches) of snow—surpassing a 40-year record set in 1986. Other regions have reported accumulations exceeding double their seasonal averages, leading to structural collapses and widespread power outages.

The fatalities include a 91-year-old woman discovered buried under 300cm (118 inches) of snow outside her residence. In Niigata prefecture, which has seen at least 12 deaths, officials reported tragic accidents involving snow disposal waterways and falls from rooftops.

Government Intervention and Disaster Relief

During a special cabinet-level meeting on Tuesday, Prime Minister Takaichi instructed ministers to utilize every available resource to prevent further loss of life. “The danger of life-threatening incidents is imminent,” stated Aomori Governor Soichiro Miyashita, who formally requested military assistance to protect vulnerable elderly residents living alone.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has confirmed:

  • 30 Fatalities since January 20th.
  • 290 Injuries, many of them serious.
  • Military Deployment focused on snow removal and emergency supply lines.

Political Implications Amid Winter Crisis

The disaster comes at a critical juncture for the Takaichi administration, as the country prepares for a parliamentary snap election scheduled for this Sunday, February 8. Heavy snow is expected to impact voter turnout and logistical preparations in the Sea of Japan coastal regions.
