The French government has ordered an immediate and comprehensive security review at the Louvre Museum and across all national cultural sites following an audacious daylight robbery on Sunday, in which thieves stole priceless crown jewels.
In a brazen act that some politicians branded a “national humiliation,” four individuals utilized a crane to smash an upstairs window at the world’s most visited museum. They subsequently accessed a gallery containing royal jewelry, threatened guards with angle grinders, and escaped within an estimated six to seven minutes on motorbikes.

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin acknowledged the profound security failure, telling France Inter radio, “What is certain is that we failed. Someone was capable of putting a crane truck in the open in the streets of Paris… and take priceless jewels and give France a deplorable image.”
Following an emergency meeting, the Culture and Interior Ministers agreed to launch a full investigation into the security failures at the Louvre. Culture Minister Rachida Dati stressed that security protocols must be rapidly re-evaluated across the country.
“For too long we have looked into the security of visitors but not the security of art works,” Minister Dati told M6TV. She announced plans to introduce measures, including potential shortcuts to public procurement rules, to accelerate security enhancements in museums nationwide.
The probe into the incident—which some media outlets have dubbed the “heist of the century”—has been entrusted to a specialist police unit renowned for its high success rate in cracking complex, high-profile robberies. Authorities are currently searching for the four thieves involved in the break-in.
The event has drawn large crowds to the closed museum, with citizens gathering to observe the damaged window, reflecting widespread public shock and concern over the security of national treasures.
