Historic Winter Storm Leaves Millions Without Power and Grounds US Travel

Jan 27, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

A Storm Stretching Across the Nation

A massive winter storm is sweeping across the United States, threatening to shut down daily life for millions of people. The storm is expected to affect the eastern two-thirds of the country, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures.

The National Weather Service warned that the storm’s impact could last several days, making travel difficult and damaging critical infrastructure. Meteorologists described the storm as unusual because of its size, stretching nearly 2,000 miles from New Mexico and Texas to New England. About 213 million people are under some form of winter weather alert.

Power Outages and Travel Chaos

The storm has already caused widespread disruption. More than one million customers were without electricity as of Sunday afternoon, with Tennessee hit hardest. Other states, including Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama, also reported major power outages.

Ice buildup on power lines and trees has made repairs difficult and dangerous. Air travel has been heavily affected, with more than 10,000 flights cancelled and thousands more delayed. Major airlines warned passengers to expect sudden changes and urged them to check flight updates before heading to airports.

Emergency Declarations and Safety Warnings

Calling the storm “historic,” President Donald Trump approved federal emergency disaster declarations for nearly 20 states and Washington, DC. State and federal agencies are working to prepare for the worst. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has moved supplies, emergency staff, and search-and-rescue teams into affected areas.

Officials are urging people to stay off the roads, keep warm, and prepare for possible power outages. Authorities warn that icy conditions and freezing temperatures could pose serious risks, especially for vulnerable communities, as the storm continues into the week.
