The meeting, the first between Pope Leo and a Trump administration official in nearly a year, occurred amidst President Trump’s repeated criticisms of the Pope’s stance on the US-Israeli war on Iran.
Experts noted the Vatican’s unusual approach in its statement. Peter Martin, a former US diplomat to the Holy See, pointed out that the statement “makes it clear that, at present, there is work to do.” Austen Ivereigh, a Vatican specialist, suggested that the focus on building relations indicates that “they are at the moment not good.”
The US embassy to the Holy See mentioned discussions on “topics of mutual interest in the Western Hemisphere” and the “strong” partnership in advancing religious freedom. However, the Vatican’s statement omitted these specific topics, mentioning only an “exchange of views” on the world situation and the shared goal of improving bilateral relations.

Kenneth Hackett, former US ambassador to the Holy See, interpreted the Vatican statement as an indication that “there were no substantive agreements.”
The Vatican’s directness is noteworthy, as it is uncommon for the Vatican to publicly suggest strained relations with a foreign nation. In contrast, a statement following Pope Leo’s meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed “satisfaction for the good relations” between Poland and the Vatican.
Pope Leo has previously drawn Trump’s criticism for his views on the US-Israeli war on Iran and immigration policies. Trump’s recent public attacks on the Pope have prompted backlash from Christian leaders across the political spectrum.
The Vatican’s decision to reveal details of the Pope’s discussion with Secretary Rubio is also unusual. Typically, such releases focus on meetings with senior Vatican diplomats, not papal encounters. According to Ivereigh, the Vatican issued the statement due to intense media interest and “in anticipation of any White House spin.”
