VIENNA, AUSTRIA – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has formally recognized Pakistan’s civil nuclear program for its steady progress and close cooperation with the international body. This commendation follows a meeting between IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Raja Ali Raza Anwar, on the sidelines of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.
In a post on X, Director General Grossi highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in expanding its civil nuclear energy capacity, noting that the country’s nuclear power program is advancing “at a good pace,” particularly with the ongoing construction of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-5 (C-5). Grossi also recalled his visit to the site in February, where he witnessed the first concrete pouring—a key milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its energy security with clean and sustainable nuclear power.
Strengthening Cooperation Under Key Initiatives
The meeting between the IAEA Director General and the PAEC Chairman served as an opportunity to review and reinforce cooperation under various agency initiatives. These include Atoms4Food, which uses nuclear technology to improve crop yields, ensure food safety, and control pests, and Rays of Hope, a program dedicated to expanding access to nuclear medicine and radiotherapy for cancer care across the Asia-Pacific region.
Director General Grossi praised Pakistan’s proactive engagement with the IAEA, particularly its significant contributions to capacity-building, training, and the application of nuclear knowledge for socio-economic development. He underscored Pakistan’s role as an important and committed partner in the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.
Commitment to Safety and Sustainable Development
The PAEC Chairman, Raja Ali Raza Anwar, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, in full alignment with both national development priorities and IAEA frameworks. He emphasized that Pakistan’s nuclear power plants operate under the highest safety standards and contribute substantially to the country’s energy mix by providing reliable, low-carbon electricity.

Anwar added that PAEC’s activities are closely aligned with the IAEA’s vision of promoting nuclear technology for “peace, health, and prosperity.” He also highlighted Pakistan’s valuable contributions to regional initiatives under the IAEA, where the nation’s expertise in nuclear applications is being shared with other member states in the Asia-Pacific.
This meeting follows the recent signing of the fifth Country Programme Framework (CPF) for 2026-2031 between Pakistan and the IAEA. The new CPF, which outlines national priorities for nuclear science and technology, is a testament to the enduring partnership and aims to strengthen Pakistan’s socio-economic development while reinforcing its role as a responsible member of the global community.
