Oil Markets in Turmoil: Iran Signals Blockade of Strait of Hormuz

The global energy landscape faced an unprecedented threat as the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) began broadcasting warnings that passage through the Strait of Hormuz is “not allowed.” Both the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the EU’s Aspides naval mission confirmed that vessels in the Gulf are receiving VHF radio transmissions from Iranian forces declaring a total halt to shipping. While Tehran has not yet issued a formal diplomatic notice of a blockade, these frontline warnings have effectively paralyzed the world’s most critical oil chokepoint.

The Strait of Hormuz is the lifeblood of the global economy, carrying roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day, nearly one-fifth of the world’s total consumption. It is the primary export route for Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE, and Kuwait, and a major transit point for global liquefied natural gas (LNG). While some neighboring countries have pipelines that can bypass the waterway, their combined capacity can only handle a small fraction of the daily flow. Industry experts warn that a sustained closure would lead to a catastrophic spike in energy prices and massive supply shortages, particularly in Asian markets that rely on the strait for 80% of their oil.

This move follows the launch of major U.S.-Israeli combat operations and represents Iran’s most potent retaliatory tool. By targeting the 30-mile-wide passage, the IRGC is leveraging its geographic control over strategic islands to pressure the international community. As the U.S. 5th Fleet remains on high alert in the region, the threat of a full-scale naval confrontation looms, with global markets bracing for the economic fallout of a shuttered Hormuz.
