Bushehr Nuclear Plant: Why an Attack Could Trigger a Gulf-Wide Disaster

Apr 6, 2026 | War & Conflict, Iran

The continuing bombardments of Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility are generating grave fears of a catastrophe that threatens the whole Gulf region, not only Iran. Bushehr is a critical energy source as the country’s only operational nuclear power plant, but it is also an extremely sensitive location where any permanent damage could have wide-ranging ramifications.

A direct strike on the reactor or its spent fuel storage could release dangerous radioactive material into the air and onto land and sea, experts say. Within days, these particles can cross borders and infect neighboring nations like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

One major issue is contaminated groundwater. Gulf states depend on desalinated seawater for about 70 percent of their drinking water, but existing systems are not made to remove radioactive substances. This would leave millions without a clean drinking supply, leading to a humanitarian crisis.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly warned against targeting nuclear facilities, emphasizing that even indirect damage, such as cutting power to cooling systems, could cause a reactor meltdown.

The comparisons have added to the global risks, drawing criticism of everything from the 2011 Fukushima disaster to the Chornobyl disaster. With attacks ongoing, the risk of an environmental and human disaster is becoming alarmingly tangible.
