Universities Reopen Amid Fresh Protests
Thousands of students gathered at major universities across Tehran as campuses reopened after a month of closure following deadly nationwide protests. Demonstrations were reported at leading institutions, including University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir University of Technology, and Shahid Beheshti University. Students chanted slogans and demanded justice for those killed during the unrest in January. Many say the reopening of campuses has only reignited calls for accountability and reform rather than calming tensions.

Clashes and Heavy Security Presence
Clashes broke out between anti-government students and those supporting the ruling system, including members linked to the Basij paramilitary force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Security forces were heavily deployed outside campuses, with videos showing confrontations at university gates. At Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, footage circulating online appeared to show officers charging at students. Many families say their children remain detained after being arrested during the January crackdown.
Nation on Edge After Bloody January
The protests follow deadly nights on January 8 and 9, when thousands were reportedly killed during a communications blackout. The unrest comes at a tense time, with fears of possible conflict involving the United States and Israel. In the western province of Ilam, crowds also gathered to welcome the release of a retired teacher who had been arrested days earlier. As students return to class, the streets show that the anger has not faded.
