In a joint press conference held today with Minister of Information Attaullah Tarar and Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry provided a comprehensive update on the Pakistan Army’s ongoing flood relief and rescue operations across the country.

Lt Gen Chaudhry confirmed the tragic loss of two military personnel who embraced martyrdom during these relief activities, with two others sustaining injuries. He lauded the sacrifices of the fallen heroes, who demonstrated unwavering commitment to serving the nation in times of crisis.

The ISPR chief detailed the extensive military mobilisation, noting that flood response units have been actively deployed in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). So far, military operations have successfully rescued approximately 28,000 people.

NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Malik provided additional data, stating that a total of nearly 210,000 people have been safely evacuated from the flood-affected regions, with no casualties reported in the overall evacuation process. He also issued an important alert regarding a new weather system, forecasting fresh rainfall between August 29 and September 9, particularly in the already inundated catchment areas. This has prompted authorities in Punjab, KP, AJK, and GB to be placed on high alert.

The ISPR chief also addressed the situation near the working boundary, confirming that all army posts remain manned with “strict vigilance” and have not been abandoned despite the flood threat.

Military assets have been instrumental in the relief efforts, with Army Aviation conducting 26 sorties to aid in rescue and supply. In coordination with civil authorities, military engineers have repaired three major bridges (two in KP, one in GB) and cleared 104 roads. The Karakoram Highway has been fully reopened, with remaining routes in Gilgit-Baltistan expected to be cleared within the next 24 to 48 hours. Furthermore, the Army has established 29 medical camps across the affected regions, providing medical treatment to over 20,700 people and distributing 225 tonnes of rations.

The press conference concluded with a collective commitment to continue working in close coordination to mitigate the impact of the floods and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
