On December 19, 2025, the World Bank officially approved a $700 million financing package for Pakistan, marking a critical step in the country’s ongoing efforts to achieve macroeconomic stability and improve public service delivery. The funding is part of a larger, multi-year initiative known as the Public Resources for Inclusive Development – Multiphase Programmatic Approach (PRID-MPA). Under this framework, Pakistan could potentially access up to $1.35 billion in total financing to bridge fiscal gaps and reform its revenue systems. This latest approval follows a smaller $47.9 million grant provided in August aimed specifically at primary education in Punjab, signaling the World Bank’s sustained commitment to both structural economic shifts and social development across the nation’s diverse provinces.

The allocation of these funds is strategically divided between national and local levels. A substantial $600 million is earmarked for federal programs focused on fiscal transparency and budgeting reforms, while $100 million is dedicated to a provincial program in Sindh to enhance local service delivery. These reforms are particularly urgent following a recent joint IMF-World Bank report that warned of “political capture” and opaque regulation stifling investment. However, the financing remains a point of regional friction; India has previously signaled it would oppose such funding, citing concerns over regional stability. Despite these tensions, the World Bank’s move is seen as a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s current reform trajectory, providing much-needed liquidity as the government works to expand its tax base and satisfy the stringent requirements of international lenders.
