BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Health Remains Critical; Family and Nation Urged to Pray for Recovery

Dec 1, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

The health condition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, 80, remains fragile and unchanged since her admission to Evercare Hospital on November 23, with doctors reporting no major improvement despite ongoing intensive treatment.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed Monday that Zia’s condition has stabilized but shows no signs of further deterioration or significant recovery. “Her physical condition remains the same—critical but stable under close monitoring,” Rizvi told reporters outside the hospital, where anxious supporters and party leaders continue to gather for updates.

Zia, suffering from multiple ailments including heart problems (with a permanent pacemaker and prior stenting), liver and kidney issues, diabetes, lung infection, arthritis, and eye-related illnesses, was admitted with breathing difficulties and excess fluid accumulation requiring regular dialysis. She receives oxygen support and can respond minimally—moving her hands and feet slightly and speaking a few words—but remains in the ICU.

Zia’s son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, based in London since 2008, appealed via social media for nationwide prayers: “We express our heartfelt thanks for all your prayers and love for the highly respected Begum Khaleda Zia. I share the deep longing as any child to have my mother’s touch in this crisis, but circumstances beyond my control prevent my return.” Rahman noted constant communication with her medical team, including plans for potential treatment abroad if advised.

Interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus emphasized Zia’s inspirational role: “During this transitional period to democracy, Khaleda Zia is a source of utmost inspiration for the nation. Her recovery is very important for the country.”

Despite her health challenges, Zia has vowed to campaign in the February 2026 elections, where BNP is positioned as a frontrunner. Jailed for corruption in 2018 under Sheikh Hasina’s regime—which barred her medical travel abroad—Zia was released last year following Hasina’s ouster in the student-led uprising.

BNP has postponed all December programs, including the “Torch Road Show,” to focus on her recovery. Supporters from across Dhaka and districts like Gazipur and Narayanganj have visited the hospital, while interfaith groups, including the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council, expressed concern and solidarity.
