Miss Mexico Fatima Bosch was crowned Miss Universe in Bangkok, concluding an exceptionally controversial pageant season marked by dramatic exits and rigging accusations. The 25-year-old’s victory followed a high-profile incident earlier in the month when she publicly walked out of an event after Thai pageant organizer Mr. Nawat Itsaragrasil berated her for failing to post promotional content, threatening disqualification for her and her supporters. The Miss Universe Organization later condemned Mr. Nawat’s behavior.

The controversy deepened a week before the final when two judges resigned, with Lebanese-French musician Omar Harfouch alleging that an “impromptu jury” had pre-selected finalists. Although the organization rejected the rigging claims, the unusual circumstances led to online speculation that Bosch was awarded the crown to compensate for the earlier mistreatment she suffered.

The pageant itself has been undergoing turbulence at the leadership level following the resignation of former owner Anne Jakrajutatip, resulting in a split leadership structure between a Thai organizer (Mr. Nawat) and a Mexican owner (Mr. Rocha). Analysts suggest the continuous controversies, coupled with the pageant’s declining traditional audience, underscore the challenges it faces in maintaining relevance while navigating cultural differences and the shift toward social media engagement.
