The Ministry of Industries and Production finalized the Mobile and Electronic Devices Manufacturing Policy 2026-33, paving the way for 5G devices to hit the Pakistani market. The move is strategically timed with the upcoming 5G spectrum auction scheduled for March 10. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan chaired the session, describing the policy as a milestone that will transform the country’s industrial sector and push the domestic production of advanced smartphones.

The new policy provides significant incentives to local manufacturers, including an 8 percent rebate on exports and reduced customs duties on imported components. To protect local industry, the government plans to increase duties on imported fully built-up (CBU) phones and accessories like chargers and headphones. With 37 licensed manufacturers already producing 40 million units annually, the industry is now shifting focus from basic feature phones to 5G-compatible devices.

Telecom experts anticipate that after the March auction, operators will require five to six months to roll out 5G infrastructure in major urban centers. Manufacturers intend to use this same window to align their production lines, ensuring that affordable 5G handsets are available to the public by late summer. This transition is expected to boost digital connectivity and stimulate economic growth by upgrading the nation’s mobile ecosystem from 4G to next-generation high-speed internet.
