Must-Win for Pakistan: Usman Tariq Confident of Super 8 Qualification

Feb 18, 2026 | Latest News, Entertainment

Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq has expressed firm confidence that the team will “bounce back” in their decisive T20 World Cup clash against Namibia on Wednesday. Following a crushing 61-run defeat to arch-rivals India at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 15, Pakistan now faces a virtual knockout situation in Colombo to keep their tournament hopes alive.

“We Have Learnt from Our Mistakes”

Addressing the media ahead of the high-stakes game, Tariq dismissed concerns about the team’s morale. “Lifting the team is only difficult when you don’t work on your mistakes,” he stated. Despite India posting a formidable 175/7 and bowling Pakistan out for just 114, Tariq emphasized that the squad has analyzed their failures. He also rubbished rumors of dropping stars Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi, insisting that seasoned match-winners should not be written off after one bad day.

The Qualification Math: Win or Go Home

Pakistan currently sits third in Group A, trailing the USA on net run rate. The scenario is simple yet tense:

  • Scenario A (Win/Washout): A victory or a rain-affected washout against Namibia will secure Pakistan’s spot in the Super Eights.

  • Scenario B (Loss): A defeat would mean immediate elimination, potentially allowing the USA or the Netherlands an opening to advance.

  • Weather Alert: With a 60-90% chance of rain forecasted for Wednesday afternoon in Colombo, the weather may play as big a role as the players.

Tariq, whose unorthodox bowling action has been the talk of the tournament, was one of the few bright spots in the India game, finishing with economical figures of 1/24. Critics, including former pacer Waqar Younis, argued he should have been introduced earlier to stop Ishan Kishan’s 77-run onslaught. As the “X-factor” of the attack, Tariq’s performance on the spin-friendly Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) pitch will be crucial in dismantling the Namibian batting lineup.
