On World AIDS Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called on Pakistanis to fundamentally change public attitudes toward HIV/AIDS and strengthen the national health system to effectively combat the disease. This year, the observance focuses on ‘Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,’ a theme crucial for Pakistan where an estimated 0.33 million people are living with HIV.
The Prime Minister emphasized that protection of health is a fundamental civil right, and the government’s priorities include providing facilities for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care. However, he stressed that ending the stigma and discrimination faced by affected individuals requires a collective, compassionate effort.

He outlined key government measures to achieve an AIDS-free Pakistan, including improving treatment access for high-risk groups, preventing mother-to-child transmission, ensuring safe blood supply, and reducing the spread among people who use drugs. He concluded that only through compassionate attitudes, innovation, and investment can the nation broaden and enhance its response to the epidemic.

In a separate update, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar met with the Chinese Ambassador to express Pakistan’s solidarity and condolences over the tragic killing of three Chinese nationals in a militant attack in Tajikistan near the Afghan border, as well as the loss of life in a recent high-rise fire in Hong Kong. Discussions also reaffirmed strong bilateral cooperation.
