Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held summit talks in New Delhi on Friday, aiming to deepen trade and defense ties while navigating intense geopolitical pressures from the United States. The visit, Putin’s first to India in four years, comes as Western sanctions continue to squeeze Russia’s economy.

Energy Security and US Sanctions Challenge
The central theme of the talks revolved around energy security, particularly India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil. Putin announced Russia was ready to continue “uninterrupted shipments” of fuel to India, which he called a reliable supplier for the fast-growing Indian economy. Modi acknowledged that “energy security has been a strong and important pillar of the India-Russia partnership.”
This robust defense of energy trade comes in the wake of punitive 50 per cent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on most Indian products in August, explicitly citing New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil as revenue funding the war in Ukraine.
India, which emerged as a major buyer of discounted Russian crude after the invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago (at one point receiving nearly 36% of its crude imports from Russia), has recently reduced these imports under US pressure. Putin directly challenged Washington’s stance, questioning why the US could purchase Russian nuclear fuel while opposing India’s oil purchases.
Trade, Tech, and Military Cooperation
The two nations reaffirmed their economic partnership, with Russia aiming to boost imports of Indian goods to grow total trade to $100 billion by 2030. Agreements are expected to be signed, including a potential deal between Indian firms and Russia’s Uralchem group to jointly set up a urea plant in Russia. Russian lenders, including Gazprombank and Alfa Bank, are also seeking approval to operate in India to facilitate bilateral trade.
On the defense front, talks highlighted a commitment to moving forward in high technologies, joint work in aviation, space, and artificial intelligence. Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov stated that the Russian defense industry is ready to support India in becoming self-reliant in defense production.
Stance on Ukraine Conflict
Prime Minister Modi articulated India’s position on the Ukraine conflict, stating clearly, “India is not neutral. India has a position, and that position is for peace.” He affirmed support for every peace initiative. Putin, in turn, thanked Modi for his attention and efforts aimed at resolving the crisis, noting that the two had discussed steps taken jointly with other partners, including the United States, toward a peaceful settlement.
The summit highlights the strategic “conundrum” faced by New Delhi: strengthening ties with one major power risks setting back relations with the other, as the US attempts to pressure India away from its decades-old relationship with Moscow.
