The UN Special Representative for the Central African Republic (CAR) has urged the Security Council to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA), warning of fragile security, regional instability, and financial strain as the country prepares for crucial December elections.
Addressing the Council, the envoy highlighted progress in the peace process following the April ceasefire between the government and key armed groups UPC and 3R, which has led to over 700 combatants being disarmed. Eleven of 14 signatory armed groups have now officially dissolved.
Over 2.3 million voters, nearly half of them women, have registered for the 28 December presidential, legislative, and local elections, though a $12 million funding gap threatens preparations.
The envoy also raised concerns over security challenges in border regions affected by the Sudan conflict and funding cuts forcing a 15% reduction in MINUSCA operations, warning that this could endanger gains in peace and stability.
