Losing Teeth Too Fast Could Signal Higher Death Risk, Study Finds

Oct 20, 2025 | Latest News

How quickly older adults lose their teeth might reveal more than just dental trouble, it could point to a higher risk of death, according to a new study from Sichuan University in China.

Researchers tracked 8,073 elderly participants over 3.5 years, comparing tooth loss rates with mortality. Their findings were clear: faster tooth loss was strongly linked to a higher risk of dying, even after accounting for factors like age, sex, lifestyle, and education.

The study doesn’t suggest that tooth loss itself is deadly. Instead, it may reflect deeper health issues such as inflammation, poor diet, obesity, or chronic illness, which also shorten lifespan. People with fewer teeth often struggle to eat balanced meals, worsening overall health.

The researchers urge that monitoring tooth loss could become a valuable tool in assessing seniors’ general health. Regular dental visits, brushing twice a day, and quitting smoking remain essential steps for longevity, and your teeth might just tell you how much time you have left.
