Trump Warns Iran “Clock is Ticking” as Nuclear Talks Stall

May 18, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that “the clock is ticking” as negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict remain deadlocked. Trump’s message, delivered via his Truth Social platform, intensifies concerns about a potential resurgence of hostilities.

“They better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them,” Trump wrote, adding, “TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”

His statement followed discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as reported by the Times of Israel. The urgency conveyed suggests a growing impatience with the negotiation process.

Iran has acknowledged responding to the latest U.S. proposal through Pakistani mediators. A foreign ministry spokesperson stated that their concerns have been communicated to the American side. However, Iranian media outlets paint a less optimistic picture, with the semi-official Mehr news agency reporting a lack of concrete concessions from the U.S., potentially leading to a negotiation impasse.

Trump’s recent message is reminiscent of his earlier warnings before the ceasefire, when he claimed a “whole civilisation” would die unless Iran agreed to a deal. He recently described the truce as being on “massive life support” after rejecting Iranian demands.

According to the Tasnim news agency, Iran’s demands include an end to Israeli attacks against Hezbollah, the cessation of the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, guarantees against future attacks on Iran, war damage compensation, and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

Fars news agency claims Washington has set five conditions, including limiting Iran to one nuclear site and transferring its enriched uranium stockpile to the U.S.

In a potential shift, Trump hinted at accepting a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear program, a point of contention throughout the negotiations.

The current ceasefire, implemented to allow for talks, has been fragile, with occasional exchanges of fire. Iran continues to control the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil and gas transit route, causing oil prices to surge due to the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.

Pakistan’s role as mediator highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics involved. However, the substantial gap between the U.S. and Iranian positions indicates a challenging path toward a lasting resolution.

Critical Analysis

Trump’s aggressive rhetoric underscores the high stakes involved and potentially ratchets up pressure on Iran to concede to U.S. demands. His language also provides a window into the US perspective which seems to suggest that previous demands about the Iranian nuclear program can be walked back.

The key sticking points are multi-faceted. While the US wants the Iranian nuclear program to be scaled back, Iran wants compensation for war damage and to have all attacks against them stopped.

The control of the Strait of Hormuz gives Iran a degree of leverage over the United States as a large percentage of the worlds oil and gas travels through the Strait.
