TRUMP VOWS TO CALL END TO RENEWED THAI-CAMBODIA BORDER WAR

Dec 11, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

US President Donald Trump has publicly declared he will “make a phone call and stop a war” between Thailand and Cambodia, vowing to intervene to salvage a fragile ceasefire he brokered in July which has completely collapsed into renewed, deadly fighting.

The border conflict, which erupted on Monday, has seen both Southeast Asian neighbors accuse each other of targeting civilians with heavy weapons, including BM-21 rockets, with Cambodia even withdrawing its athletes from the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand citing safety concerns.

The current round of fighting, which has killed at least four Thai soldiers and seven Cambodian civilians, began after Thailand suspended the October de-escalation deal, accusing Cambodia of laying new landmines in violation of the truce. Speaking at a Pennsylvania rally, Trump boasted about his ability to end wars, including between India and Pakistan and Israel and Iran, before commenting on the renewed conflict.

The situation remains fraught: while a top Cambodian adviser said his country is “ready to talk at any time,” Thailand’s Foreign Minister previously stated the atmosphere was “not conducive to third-party mediation,” signaling a challenging diplomatic path for Trump’s promised intervention.
