Belgium to Recognize Palestinian State Amid Escalating Pressure on Israel

Sep 2, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Brussels – Belgium’s foreign minister, Maxime Prévot, has announced that Belgium will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. This decision aligns Belgium with other nations, including Australia, Britain, Canada, and France, that have recently taken similar steps, escalating international pressure on Israel.

A Stand Against Humanitarian Crisis, and Violations of International Law

In a statement posted on social media, Minister Prévot cited the “humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, particularly in Gaza,” and “violence perpetrated by Israel in violation of international law” as key factors behind Belgium’s decision. The move is a response to the devastating consequences of Israel’s assault on Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 63,000 people, mostly civilians, and a “man-made famine,” according to the UN-backed hunger monitor, IPC.

Minister Prévot clarified that the recognition is not intended to “sanction the Israeli people” but to ensure that their government complies with international and humanitarian law. He stated that the decision aims to “change the situation on the ground” and holds both the Israeli government and Hamas accountable for their actions.

Conditions for Formal Recognition, and New Sanctions

The formal recognition of a Palestinian state by Belgium is contingent upon specific conditions. According to Minister Prévot, Hamas must first release all remaining Israeli hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack. Additionally, the militant group must no longer have any role in managing Palestine.

In conjunction with the recognition, Belgium, a member of the European Union, will impose 12 “firm” sanctions on Israel. These measures include a ban on the import of products from Israeli settlements and a review of public procurement policies related to Israeli companies. The Belgian government will also declare Hamas leaders as persona non grata.

Furthermore, Minister Prévot announced that two “extremist” Israeli ministers and several “violent settlers” would be designated persona non grata in Belgium. While not named, these individuals are believed to be far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who have also been sanctioned by the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Belgium’s actions reflect a growing global consensus on the need for a political solution to the conflict and a clear signal to all parties that the international community demands an end to the violence and a path toward peace.
