President Donald Trump signed a historic presidential memorandum directing the United States to withdraw from 66 international organizations, signaling a definitive shift toward an “America First” isolationist policy. The list includes 31 United Nations entities and 35 non-UN organizations, many of which are dedicated to climate science, global health, and gender equality. The White House justified the mass exit by labeling these groups “a waste of taxpayer dollars” that promote “globalist agendas” hostile to U.S. sovereignty.

The most significant departure is the withdrawal from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). While the U.S. had already left the Paris Agreement, the UNFCCC is the foundational 1992 treaty that underpins all global climate diplomacy. By leaving the UNFCCC, the U.S. effectively removes itself from the legal framework of international climate negotiations entirely. Additionally, the U.S. has exited the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading authority on climate science, a move experts warn will isolate American researchers and strip the U.S. of its influence in shaping global environmental standards.
