Massive Russian Barrage Targets Kyiv Ahead of Critical Peace Talks in Florida

President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a massive, coordinated Russian assault involving approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles targeting Kyiv and national infrastructure. The President characterized the escalation as the Kremlin’s direct response to the U.S.-brokered peace initiative scheduled for discussion today in Florida with President Donald Trump.

Humanitarian and Infrastructure Impact

The bombardment, which triggered a 10-hour air raid alert in the capital, has resulted in civilian casualties and widespread damage:

  • Casualties: At least two deaths have been confirmed in the Kyiv region, with 46 others wounded, including two children.
  • Energy Crisis: State grid operator Ukrenergo reported targeted strikes on energy facilities. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that emergency power cuts have left approximately 600,000 households without electricity.

“Today, Russia demonstrated how it responds to peaceful negotiations,” President Zelensky stated. “This is a deliberate attempt to intimidate Ukraine and its partners on the eve of decisive diplomatic efforts.”

The Florida Summit and Peace Framework

Despite the ongoing strikes, President Zelensky confirmed his departure for the United States to meet with President Donald Trump. The discussions will focus on a 20-point draft document intended to serve as the foundation for ending the nearly four-year conflict.

Key points regarding the diplomatic mission include:

  • Draft Progress: The peace framework is currently 90% complete.
  • Security Guarantees: The primary focus of the meeting will be the nature, duration, and reliability of security guarantees provided by the United States.
  • Sovereignty: Ukraine remains committed to a deal that ensures lasting security and territorial integrity.

Response to Russian Allegations

The Office of the President firmly rejects claims by the Russian Foreign Ministry suggesting that Ukraine or its European partners are attempting to “torpedo” the peace process. The administration maintains that the true obstacle to peace is the continued and escalated use of force by the Russian Federation against civilian populations and critical infrastructure.

President Zelensky underscored that the final success of the peace plan remains dependent on the strength of the guarantees and the resolve of the international community to hold the aggressor accountable.
