Canada Mourns Victims of Tumbler Ridge School Shooting

Canada was plunged into grief following a horrific shooting in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, that left 10 people dead, including the suspect. The violence began Tuesday afternoon at a private residence where two bodies were discovered before the assailant moved to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. According to the RCMP, six victims were found deceased inside the school, and a seventh succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital. More than 25 others were injured, with two survivors currently in critical condition.

Visible emotional, Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the nation from Parliament Hill, announcing that flags on all federal buildings will fly at half-mast for seven days. “The nation mourns with you,” Carney stated, having canceled his planned trip to the Munich Security Conference to oversee the federal response. The suspect, identified by police as a female, was found dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted wound. While a motive remains under investigation, the tragedy has drawn global condolences from figures including King Charles III and the Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as the Canadian Olympic Committee currently competing in the 2026 Winter Games.

As the close-knit community of 2,400 residents begins to process the shock, British Columbia’s Premier David Eby described the event as one of the deadliest mass casualty incidents in Canadian history. Schools in the district will remain closed for the remainder of the week as mental health counselors and additional medical staff arrive to support the survivors.
