Understanding the Zakat Deduction Threshold
According to the federal notification, Zakat will be automatically deducted from savings accounts, profit-and-loss sharing accounts, and similar deposit schemes that hold a balance equal to or greater than Rs503,529. Accounts with a balance below this amount are exempt from the 2.5% deduction. To facilitate this process, all banks will remain closed for public dealing on the “Deduction Date”, which is the first day of Ramadan.
Ramadan Moon Sighting and Forecast
While the final decision rests with the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, scientific bodies have provided early projections for the start of the holy month:
-
SUPARCO & PMD Forecast: The new moon is expected to be born on February 17, 2026. Experts predict a “very bright chance” of sighting the crescent on the evening of February 18.
-
Expected First Fast: If the moon is sighted as predicted, the first of Ramadan will fall on Thursday, February 19.
-
Official Meeting: Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabeer Azad will chair the main moon-sighting meeting in Peshawar on Wednesday evening to receive testimonies from across the country.

Compliance for Financial Agencies
The government has directed all Zakat Collecting and Controlling Agencies (ZCCAs) to ensure strict adherence to the new Nisab. Deducted funds must be deposited immediately into the Central Zakat Account No. CZ-08 at the State Bank of Pakistan. This centralized collection ensures that the funds are redistributed to the needy and eligible beneficiaries as part of the country’s social safety net during the month of blessings.
