Rare Exchange After Months of Silence
Ukraine and Russia have carried out a rare exchange of prisoners of war and civilians following two days of US-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi. In the swap, 157 Ukrainians, including seven civilians, and 157 Russian soldiers were returned home.

It was the first such exchange in four months and one of the few moments of progress in a conflict that has lasted since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the exchange as the return of “our people,” promising that Ukraine would continue efforts to bring back every citizen still held in captivity.
Talks Without a Breakthrough
The prisoner swap followed peace negotiations involving Russian, Ukrainian, and US delegations in the United Arab Emirates. The talks, led by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, aimed to find a path toward ending the four-year war.
However, no breakthrough was reported. Zelensky said the discussions were difficult and called for faster results. The most sensitive issues remain unresolved, especially territorial demands, with Russia pressing Ukraine to give up more land in eastern Ukraine, and Ukraine demanding strong security guarantees to prevent future attacks.

War Pressure Continues
Despite the talks, fighting and pressure on the ground continue. Russia has resumed heavy attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving thousands without electricity, heating, and water during freezing winter temperatures. While the prisoner exchange has given families on both sides a rare moment of relief, the wider conflict remains far from resolution.
