The United Nations has issued a stern warning regarding the safety and security of its peacekeeping personnel following a series of dangerous incidents involving the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, confirmed that UNIFIL patrols were targeted and obstructed in multiple locations along the Blue Line, the 120-kilometre “line of withdrawal” separating Lebanon and Israel.

Reported Incidents near the Blue Line:
- Bastarra Blockade: A UNIFIL patrol was targeted while inspecting a roadblock in the village of Bastarra.
- Kfar Shouba Fire: A separate patrol reported machine gunfire originating from south of the Blue Line in immediate proximity to their position.
- Operational Restrictions: In recent days, UNIFIL has reported multiple instances where local individuals have restricted the movement of peacekeepers within the Mission’s area of operations.
The United Nations emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had been notified of the patrols’ activities in advance, in accordance with standard operating procedures for sensitive areas.
“Any act that may jeopardize the safety and security of United Nations peacekeepers is completely unacceptable,” Mr. Dujarric stated. “We reiterate our call to all actors to cease activities that risk the wellbeing of peacekeepers and interfere with their mandated activities.”

Implementation of Resolution 1701
The United Nations underscored that these interferences directly undermine the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701. The Mission reminded all parties of their international legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel operating under a neutral mandate.
UNIFIL remains committed to its mission of monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting stability in southern Lebanon, despite the heightening risks to its personnel.
