Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to Nine Months in Romanian Prison Over On-Stage Cannabis Use

On December 18, 2025, a Romanian appeals court sentenced American rapper Wiz Khalifa, born Cameron Jibril Thomaz, to nine months in prison for smoking cannabis during a performance. The ruling stems from an incident at the “Beach, Please!” festival in July 2024, where the artist was caught with 18 grams of marijuana and filmed consuming a joint on stage. The Constanța Court of Appeal overturned a previous lower-court decision that had only imposed a nominal fine, arguing that the rapper’s “ostentatious act” sent a dangerous message of normalization to his young audience. Judges emphasized that as a high-profile performer, his public drug use encouraged illegal conduct, justifying a custodial sentence over a financial penalty. Despite the legal escalation, the rapper was sentenced in absentia and was seen performing in California just days ago, seemingly unbothered by the overseas judicial development.

Legal experts, including Romanian criminologist Vlad Zaha, suggest the likelihood of the rapper actually serving time is minimal. While Romania is expected to submit a formal extradition request to the United States, experts note that the U.S. rarely extradites citizens for non-violent drug offenses that are legal in many American states. Khalifa, a ten-time Grammy nominee and founder of his own cannabis brand, has previously expressed respect for Romanian authorities but joked on social media about returning “without a big joint next time.” For now, the sentence serves more as a symbolic stance by the Romanian judiciary against the public promotion of drug culture than an imminent threat to the rapper’s freedom, as he continues his domestic touring schedule without interruption.
