Zohran Mamdani Vows to Arrest Netanyahu if Elected Mayor

Sep 14, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City, today expanded on his campaign pledge to order the New York Police Department (N.Y.P.D.) to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he enter the city. Mr. Mamdani stated that the action would be a clear signal that New York “stands up for international law.”

In a recent interview, Mr. Mamdani affirmed his commitment to the pledge, specifying that if elected, he would direct the N.Y.P.D. to apprehend the Israeli leader at the airport upon his arrival. This action, according to Mr. Mamdani, would be in fulfillment of the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Mr. Netanyahu for alleged war crimes.

Mr. Mamdani, a sitting state assemblyman, explained his position as a necessary response at the local level when federal action is absent. He drew a parallel to the decision made by then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who defied federal law to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004.

While legal experts have suggested that such a move would be both “impractical and likely illegal,” the candidate’s campaign maintains that the pledge reflects a core commitment to human rights and international accountability. The candidate has consistently stated his view that Mr. Netanyahu is a war criminal and is committing genocide in Gaza.

The pledge is expected to provoke strong reactions in New York, which is home to the second-largest Jewish population in the world. Mr. Mamdani has previously faced scrutiny for his stances, including his initial refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” a position he has since clarified by stating he would discourage its use while maintaining his view on the Israeli leader.

The Mamdani campaign asserts that its platform is centered on demonstrating proactive leadership on both local and international issues, ensuring that the city’s values align with a commitment to justice and human rights.
