On January 27, 2026, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif heralded a new era for Pakistan’s education system by making Artificial Intelligence (AI) a mandatory subject in all public schools across the province. In a move she described as a “historic digital leap,” the Chief Minister announced that an AI-trained teacher would be appointed to every government school, supported by a specialized network of 1,000 AI Master Trainers. The province plans to fully integrate the AI curriculum within the next 60 days, ensuring students gain early exposure to coding, data analysis, and ethical technology use.

The policy launch coincided with the first-ever AI training session for the provincial cabinet. During the workshop, titled “Empowering Punjab with AI,” cabinet members were briefed by Google for Education experts on using tools like Gemini to streamline governance, draft official summaries, and enhance sector-specific reforms. The Chief Minister emphasized that AI is no longer a luxury but an “indispensable” tool for effective policymaking and transparent public service delivery.

The broader partnership with Google also includes the issuance of 300,000 digital IDs for students and a training program for 200,000 students under the Punjab Education Foundation. By declaring 2026 the “Year of Youth,” the Punjab government aims to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural centers, equipping the next generation with the competitive skills required for the global future economy.
