China Travel Warning Slams Japanese Tourism, and Retail Stocks

Japanese shares in tourism and retail sectors plunged Monday after Beijing issued a stark advisory urging its citizens to avoid travel and study in Japan, intensifying a diplomatic row sparked by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s hawkish comments on a potential Taiwan conflict.

Takaichi, a conservative critic of China’s regional ambitions, told parliament on November 7 that a Beijing assault on Taiwan—mere 100 km from Japan’s Yonaguni Island—could trigger Japan’s “survival-threatening situation” clause under 2015 security laws, enabling Self-Defense Forces intervention. Beijing, viewing Taiwan as a renegade province, decried the remarks as interference, prompting the advisory citing “safety risks” and rising anti-Chinese crimes—despite no policy shift from Tokyo.

China, Japan’s top tourist source (over 5% of outbound trips in 2024), retaliated further: Chinese airlines like China Southern, Eastern, and Air China offered flight refunds; a coast guard vessel sailed near disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands Sunday. Over 100,000 Chinese students study in Japan annually.

Market Fallout

  • Department stores: Mitsukoshi/Isetan parent Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings -11.4%; Takashimaya -6%.
  • Fashion/cosmetics: Uniqlo’s Fast Retailing -6%; Shiseido -9%.
  • Airlines: Japan Airlines and ANA Holdings down 4-5%.
  • Theme parks: Oriental Land (Tokyo Disney) -5.8%.
  • Discount retail: Don Quijote’s Pan Pacific -8.4%.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara called Beijing’s actions misaligned with leader-level commitments for “mutually beneficial” ties. Japan dispatched Asia-Pacific Director Masaaki Kanai to Beijing for talks Tuesday. A Kyodo poll shows Japanese public divided on defending Taiwan.

As key trade partners, the spat risks broader economic ripples, with Tokyo scrambling jets after a suspected Chinese drone near Yonaguni Saturday. De-escalation remains critical to safeguard tourism—a $50B industry—and bilateral stability.
