ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – August 9, 2025 – The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic power project for Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), fulfilling a recent promise made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The project, which had already been cleared by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), is designed to address the severe electricity shortage in the region. With a total cost of Rs24.957 billion, the initiative will be completed in three phases over a period of three years.
The project will benefit all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, with power to be distributed in the following phases:
- Phase 1: Skardu district will receive 18.958 MW of electricity.
- Phase 2: The districts of Hunza, Gilgit, and Diamer will be supplied with 6.005 MW, 28.013 MW, and 13.126 MW respectively.
- Phase 3: The remaining districts will receive 16.096 MW of electricity.
Additionally, the project will provide 18.162 MW of off-grid electricity to hospitals and government offices. The approval of this project marks a significant step towards providing sustainable energy solutions and improving the quality of life for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
