Pakistani Artist in The Neon City: Eeman Masood’s Painting Lights Up Times Square

Throughout February 2026, the towering billboards of New York’s Times Square have been transformed into a tranquil sanctuary by Pakistani artist Eeman Masood. Every night from 11:57 PM to midnight, thousands of spectators witness her hand-painted animation, titled “Listen,” as part of the prestigious “Midnight Moment” series by Times Square Arts. An alumna of the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore and the University of Victoria in Canada, Masood is a trained miniature painter who has successfully merged ancient South Asian artistic traditions with modern digital motion.

The animation is a lyrical meditation on ecological resilience, centered on a majestic, meticulously hand-painted banyan tree. Inspired by a 2023 trip to Lahore, where she saw a resilient “tree of blessing” thriving despite urban neglect, Masood uses the banyan to symbolize quiet generosity and hope. The piece features shimmering particles representing life energy and vibrant peacocks, all set to an otherworldly soundtrack of flute and santur composed by her fellow NCA alumnus, Mujeeb.

By bringing the “whispers of nature” to the “din of the city,” Masood’s work serves as a bridge between Pakistani heritage and a global audience. The selection of a miniature painter for such a massive public platform marks a significant milestone for South Asian art, proving that even a three-minute digital experience can offer a profound moment of reflection in the world’s busiest intersection.
