Egypt Secures Third Term on UN Human Rights Council, Vows to Advance Reform Agenda

Egypt has won a seat on the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, receiving 173 votes in elections at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Representing the African Group alongside Mauritius and South Africa, Egypt’s election underscores its expanding diplomatic influence and ongoing efforts to shape human rights discourse globally.

This marks Egypt’s third term on the council; two under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, and comes amid implementation of its National Human Rights Strategy (2021–2026), which aims to strengthen civil liberties, promote equality, and modernize justice and correctional systems.

The Foreign Ministry led an extensive campaign to secure the seat, emphasizing recent reforms and socioeconomic development initiatives.

With its new term starting January 1, 2026, Cairo plans to launch a new human rights framework following the conclusion of the current strategy. Key priorities include expanding social protection programs, enhancing women’s and youth empowerment, and ensuring fairer access to services.

Egypt’s active role in regional diplomacy, highlighted by the recent Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, has further bolstered its image as a stabilizing force in the Middle East.

Analysts say the seat offers Egypt an opportunity to demonstrate concrete progress on its human rights commitments while balancing domestic reform with regional leadership.
