DPRK Confirms Short-Range Ballistic Missile Launch

Oct 22, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

The Republic of Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirms that it detected multiple short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) fired by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) this morning, Wednesday, October 22.

The projectiles were launched in the direction of the East Sea and are assessed to have flown approximately 350 kilometers (217 miles) before falling in an inland area of the DPRK. Our military immediately stepped up monitoring and surveillance activities following the detection of the launch.

The timing of this missile launch, occurring one week before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit is scheduled to commence in Gyeongju, South Korea, is regarded as a blatant and calculated act of provocation. Such actions unnecessarily heighten regional tensions and clearly violate United Nations Security Council resolutions prohibiting the DPRK from using ballistic missile technology.

The JCS has immediately engaged in close coordination with our primary security allies, the United States and Japan, sharing all relevant information and assessments. Our forces are maintaining an ironclad, combined defensive posture and stand ready to immediately and decisively respond to any further provocations.

The Republic of Korea Government and military strongly condemn these tests, which undermine peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the broader region. We urge Pyongyang to cease all destabilizing actions and return to dialogue immediately.
