At least eight people have lost their lives and more than 2,000 residents have been displaced after severe flooding struck the Sibolga region in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency.
A destructive flood and landslides have struck Tapanuli and Sibolga, North Sumatra, leaving widespread damage, isolating communities, and causing a total outage of both electricity and internet access.

The flooding was triggered by heavy overnight rainfall, which also caused landslides in several parts of the region, worsening the situation and hindering rescue efforts. Local media footage showed emergency responders using rubber boats to reach residents stranded by rising floodwaters.
Authorities stated that thousands of homes have been affected, forcing families to evacuate to safer locations as water levels continue to pose significant risks. The National Search and Rescue Agency has issued warnings urging residents to avoid flood-prone areas as heavy rains persist across parts of the region.
