In a move that blends convenience with creativity, Google has rolled out a new Gemini-powered feature in Google Drive that converts lengthy PDFs into engaging audio podcasts. The feature, called Audio Overviews, lets users listen to AI-generated hosts summarize and discuss the contents of any PDF, turning even the driest corporate report into a lively, digestible conversation.

As of November 2025, Audio Overviews is available for users with paid Google Workspace or Google AI plans, including Business Standard, Enterprise, and AI Pro tiers.

Once activated, it allows you to select any PDF stored in Drive, click “Create an audio overview,” and let Gemini handle the rest. Within minutes, the system generates a short, conversational podcast, usually between two and ten minutes long, complete with two AI hosts who bring humor and personality to the discussion.
According to early testers, including ZDNET contributor Lance Whitney, the hosts don’t just summarize; they engage in banter, joke lightly, and humanize technical topics.
For example, a podcast made from a PDF about Excel tips featured one host joking about people’s “love-hate relationship” with spreadsheets, while the other highlighted how complex formulas can cost users “time and sanity.”
The resulting audio file is automatically saved in a new “Audio Overviews” folder inside Google Drive and can be played directly on desktop or mobile devices, ideal for catching up during a commute or workout.
The technology behind this innovation comes from the same AI podcast generation engine used in Google NotebookLM, Search, and Chrome, combining text summarization with synthetic voice dialogue generation.
Still, Google cautions users that AI hosts may occasionally misstate facts, making the tool best suited for overviews rather than precise analysis of sensitive business documents. Competing platforms like ElevenLabs Reader and Speechify offer similar AI podcast tools, but Google’s deep integration within Drive gives it a powerful advantage in accessibility and workflow continuity.
In essence, this feature transforms how professionals and students can consume dense information on the go, merging Gemini’s conversational AI with the convenience of Drive, and redefining how we “read” PDFs in the AI era.
