Greenpeace International Condemns Military Action in Venezuela; Warns Against “Reckless” Fossil Fuel Exploitation

Greenpeace International expressed deep concern today regarding recent military actions by the United States in Venezuela, labeling the intervention a violation of international law and a dangerous pivot toward fossil fuel expansion during a period of global climate instability. The organization issued the warning following statements from President Donald Trump claiming de-facto control over the country and indicating the U.S. would be “very strongly involved” in Venezuela’s oil sector.

Climate and Environmental Risks

With Venezuela holding the largest proven crude oil reserves in the world, Greenpeace warns that targeting these resources for exploitation contradicts global efforts to mitigate climate breakdown.

“Trump’s own words make it clear that control and exploitation of those reserves is his current priority,” said Mads Christensen, Executive Director of Greenpeace International. “In an era of accelerating climate breakdown, eyeing Venezuela’s vast oil reserves this way is both reckless and dangerous. The only safe path forward is a just transition away from fossil fuels, one that protects health, safeguards ecosystems, and supports communities rather than sacrificing them for short-term profit.”

Human Rights and Sovereignty

Greenpeace emphasized that the rights and safety of the Venezuelan people must remain the primary focus, asserting their right to determine their own future without external coercion or military force. The organization called for:

  • An immediate rejection of unilateral military intervention by the international community.
  • A reaffirmation of the UN Charter’s prohibition on the use of force for economic gain.
  • Prioritization of civilian protection and independent monitoring of human rights and environmental risks.

A Call for a Just Transition

Greenpeace urges global leaders to resist using the current crisis as a catalyst for fossil fuel expansion. Instead, the organization advocates for a recovery grounded in dignity and self-determination.

“Crucially, states must resist efforts to exploit the crisis for fossil fuel expansion and instead mobilise financial, legal, and political support for a just transition that serves the Venezuelan people — not oil interests,” added Christensen. “Stability will not come through oil fields or military force. It is time to chart a different path by mobilising climate finance and debt relief for a fossil-free future shaped by people, not profit.”
