The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, issued an official video statement on Monday confirming the deaths of several high-ranking leaders, including its prominent spokesperson known as Abu Obeida. This marks the first time the group has formally acknowledged the loss of the figure who served as the face of its media strategy throughout the two-year conflict in Gaza. During the announcement, the group revealed Abu Obeida’s true identity as Hudhayfah Samir Abdullah al-Kahlout and introduced a new masked successor who will inherit his title.

In addition to the spokesperson, Hamas confirmed the death of Mohammed Sinwar, the younger brother of the late Yahya Sinwar. Mohammed had reportedly taken over as the brigades’ chief of staff following the death of commander Mohammed Deif earlier this year. The statement also listed other fallen high-ranking officials, including Mohammed Shabanah, the head of the Rafah Brigade, along with leaders Hakam al-Issa and Raed Saad. These deaths follow a series of high-profile assassinations by Israel, including former political chiefs Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar.

The new spokesperson addressed the current political climate, stating that while Hamas remains committed to the ceasefire established over two months ago, they will continue to defend themselves against repeated Israeli violations. Despite the significant loss of leadership, the group rejected all calls for disarmament, vowing to maintain their resistance as long as the occupation continues.
