Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland Ignites Regional Tensions

Dec 31, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

On December 26, 2025, Israel became the first United Nations member state to officially recognize the breakaway Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign nation. In a formal declaration, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi established full diplomatic relations, promising cooperation in agriculture, technology, and health. While mass celebrations erupted in the Somaliland capital of Hargeisa, the move has triggered a diplomatic firestorm. Somalia condemned the recognition as a “blunt aggression” against its sovereignty, while the African Union and China warned of a dangerous precedent that could encourage secessionist movements across the continent.

Analysts suggest the recognition is a calculated strategic maneuver to secure Israel’s interests in the Red Sea. By partnering with Somaliland, which oversees a critical coastline along the Gulf of Aden, Israel gains a “forward defense” position to monitor Iranian influence and counter Houthi rebels in Yemen. However, the move has faced intense scrutiny at the UN Security Council, where several member states alleged a clandestine link between the recognition and plans for the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Somaliland. Although Hargeisa denies any such deal, the claims have fueled outrage from the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League. With the United States taking a “wait-and-see” approach and regional powers like Turkey and Egypt siding with Mogadishu, the recognition has fundamentally shifted the fragile balance of power in the Horn of Africa.
