A US federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking the detention and potential deportation of British social media campaigner Imran Ahmed, founder of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). The ruling comes after Mr. Ahmed, a US permanent resident, filed a legal complaint against high-ranking officials in the Trump administration.
US District Judge Vernon S. Broderick granted the order on Thursday, preventing the government from detaining Mr. Ahmed without a hearing. The legal action followed an announcement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Mr. Ahmed and four others were being denied visas or sanctioned for allegedly seeking to “coerce” technology platforms into censoring free speech.

Context of the Legal Challenge
The administration has accused the CCDH of pressuring US platforms to suppress specific political viewpoints. Mr. Ahmed’s legal team, led by Roberta Kaplan, argues that the government cannot deport a green card holder based on a disagreement with their advocacy work. “The federal government can’t deport a green card holder… simply because it doesn’t like what he has to say,” Kaplan stated.
Mr. Ahmed, who lives in the United States with his American wife and child, maintains that the sanctions are an attempt to “bully” him away from his work monitoring online hate speech and protecting children on social media.
International and Digital Implications
The visa denials have sparked a backlash from European leaders, who have defended the necessity of organizations that monitor online content. The CCDH previously gained international attention following a legal dispute with Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) over reports regarding a rise in hate speech on the platform.

The judge’s decision provides temporary relief as the case proceeds, ensuring Mr. Ahmed can remain with his family while the merits of the administration’s sanctions are debated in court.
