Technical Achievement and Production Capacity
The Baragzai X-1 well was successfully drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres. Rigorous testing has confirmed a 187-metre thick hydrocarbon-bearing zone within the Datta Formation. Initial production tests, conducted at a 32/64-inch ch
oke, yielded the following results:
- Crude Oil: 4,100 barrels per day (BPD)
- Natural Gas: 10.5 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD)
- Flowing Pressure: 3,880 pounds per square inch gauge (PSIG)
Strategic Significance
This discovery represents a vital addition to Pakistan’s indigenous energy resources. By enhancing local production, OGDCL aims to bridge the energy supply-demand gap and reduce the national economy’s reliance on expensive fuel imports.
The find follows the successful de-risking of the region by the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well in December 2024, which confirmed the potential of the Kingriali Formation. Together, these discoveries solidify the Nashpa Block as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s hydrocarbon future.
Joint Venture Partnerships
OGDCL serves as the operator of the Nashpa exploration license with a majority 65% working interest. The joint venture partners include:
- OGDCL (Operator): 65%
- Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL): 30%
- Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL): 5%

Future Outlook: Shale Gas Expansion
Building on this momentum, OGDCL is accelerating its unconventional resource program. The company is transitioning from single-well testing to a comprehensive five-to-six-well shale program scheduled for 2026-27. This initiative targets tight and shale gas formations which, if successfully commercialized, could lead to the development of hundreds of wells across the country.
