Pakistan Promotes Electric Vehicles to Cut Fuel Imports and Save Reserves

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasised the urgent need to promote environment-friendly electric vehicles (EVs) across Pakistan to reduce dependence on imported fuel and save precious foreign reserves amid rising global oil prices.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad on Monday where 15 electric vehicles were handed over to the Islamabad Traffic Police, the Prime Minister said such initiatives should be adopted by all law enforcement agencies and provinces.

“These vehicles run on batteries and do not consume petrol or oil. This is a significant step that will have a positive impact on our foreign reserves,” he said.

The Prime Minister congratulated Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his team for launching the eco-friendly project and announced that another batch of electric vehicles would be inducted soon.

Inspector General of Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi briefed the Prime Minister that each EV will be manned by a team consisting of a captain, a male responder, one responder, and a driver in special uniforms. These vehicles will be deployed on key avenues of the capital to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Each vehicle can cover 350 to 400 kilometres on a single full charge. Fast charging takes 60 to 90 minutes, while regular charging requires 6 to 8 hours. According to officials, every electric vehicle is expected to save up to Rs550,000 per month compared to petrol-powered vehicles, and the cost of procurement will be recovered within 13 to 14 months.

The introduction of these EVs is part of the government’s broader push to promote green transportation and reduce the country’s fuel import bill, especially at a time when regional tensions have caused global petroleum prices to spiral.
