Highlights of the Joint Statement
The joint statement, signed by 21 nations including Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Iran, and Qatar, categorized the recognition as a “blatant disregard for international law.” Key points include:
- Violation of UN Charter: The signatories underscored that the move violates the cardinal principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- Rejection of Expansionism: The statement slammed the “expansionist” policy underlying the move and its potential link to attempts regarding the forced expulsion of the Palestinian people.
- Precedent Warning: The nations warned that recognizing fragmented parts of sovereign states encourages secessionist movements globally, posing a threat to international peace.
Somali Response
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, addressing an emergency parliamentary session, termed the recognition an act of “blunt aggression” and a threat to regional stability. While Israel cited the “spirit of the Abraham Accords” for the move, Pakistan and its OIC partners have stood firm in their unequivocal rejection of any measure that undermines the unity of the Somali Republic.
Pakistan remains committed to promoting regional peace and stability through adherence to international law and the protection of the sovereignty of fellow member states.
