WhatsApp Developing Anti-Spoiler Feature for Chat Protection

Tech enthusiasts discovered that WhatsApp is working on a long-awaited “Spoiler” formatting tool. Spotted by WABetaInfo in the latest TestFlight build for iOS and the Android beta, the feature aims to give users a way to hide sensitive plot points or surprise information. Much like the existing options for Bold, Italic, and ~~Strikethrough~~, this new tool will allow users to cover specific words or entire messages with a gray bar. Recipients will then have to tap the bar to reveal the hidden text.

For power users, the feature will be accessible through a simple shorthand syntax: placing “double pipes” (||) before and after the text you wish to conceal. While it is currently being developed for text messages in both individual and group chats, there is no official word yet on whether this protection will extend to images or videos. This update brings WhatsApp in line with other major messaging platforms like Telegram and Discord, which have offered similar spoiler protections for years.

Although the feature is currently in the development phase and not yet open for public beta testing, its presence in both iOS and Android builds suggests a global rollout could happen soon. This addition is expected to be a major relief for fans of movies, sports, and TV shows who want to discuss the latest events without ruining the experience for their friends.
