Punjab Eases Section 144 for Jamaat-e-Islami Gathering

The Punjab government has conditionally eased Section 144 restrictions to allow the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to hold its 24th general congregation at Minar-e-Pakistan, marking the first such event in eleven years.

The Punjab Home Department granted permission based on recommendations from the district administration.

Crucially, the permission is highly conditional. It explicitly prohibits any rallies or processions outside the venue, bans any attempts at forced business closures, and strictly forbids the delivery of inflammatory speeches directed against constitutional institutions or religious groups.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) emir, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, has declared that the party’s movement for systemic reform will continue until the current political order is completely transformed. Speaking critically of the nation’s rulers, Hafiz Naeem accused them of fearing the powerful while actively crushing the weak, ignoring the public mandate, and empowering those who exploit ordinary citizens.

He asserted that the JI represents ordinary citizens, not feudal lords or capitalists, and vowed that neither of those two systems would be allowed to prevail. The JI chief stressed that any party failing to respect the people’s mandate is incapable of delivering genuine change.

This move facilitates the political gathering while maintaining stringent security and order, ensuring the event adheres strictly to the defined parameters of a static congregation.
