Putin, and Modi Meet to Fortify Strategic Partnership Amid Geopolitical Tension

Dec 5, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi for a significant two-day state visit, marking his first trip to India since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, underscoring both nations’ commitment to their long-standing “particularly privileged strategic partnership.” This highly anticipated visit coincides with complex geopolitical maneuvering, including recent peace talks with the United States regarding Ukraine and a period of tension between the US and India over New Delhi’s continued strong ties with Moscow, particularly its increased purchasing of Russian crude oil.

The visit, which signals the formal resumption of the annual India-Russia summit tradition that was interrupted in 2022, will see Putin engage in high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to advance the wide-ranging relationship. The core agenda focuses heavily on reinforcing defence and energy trade, with Putin accompanied by a large delegation including the Defence Minister and top executives from sanctioned Russian oil and arms companies. While India maintains a historic policy of non-alignment, the summit forces Modi to execute a delicate balancing act to maintain both the necessary strategic military and energy benefits derived from Russia while preserving its increasingly important ties with Western partners, providing signs of how India plans to juggle its competing relationships without sacrificing any of them.
